Role of Vitamins in wound healing and skin repair

Not only do the antioxidants stop the free radical reactions, they promote the repair process. SOD encourages new tissue to grow. It enhances collagen and reduces swelling. Wounds treated with SOD heal better, stronger, quicker.

Experiments show that  wound repair is greatly enhanced when some specific minerals and vitamins are present.

Vitamin B5
Vitamin C
Copper
Zinc
Magnesium
Manganese

are the principal agents which help in repairing the damaging tissues.

In a French study, it was found that these Vitamins would increase the concentrations of some
minerals in the skin which would helo heal the skim.

Vitamin B5 greatly speeds the repair process, in a Swiss experiment it was found that the skin cells raced toward the "wound" while all these vitamins as mentione above were present. The mornally tendancy of the cells would be to remain stationary where as in this experiment they were found racing towards to would to enable healing.

Vitamin B5 increases the speed of repair, also helps produce more number of cells which are responsible for would healing and repair. With the availability of Vitamin B5 the cells could travel longer distance towards the wound to heal the wound.

Copper is also important, copper supplements increase bone healing. It also creates cross links in collagen and elastin.

Copper is also useful for the synthesis of a natural antioxidant which is known as copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD is also very useful in would healing. After an injury the SOD and other antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E are greatly reduced.

If the vitamin supplements are given during the period of wound healing, the healing is speedier and better and scarring is reduced greatly.

Michelle0g, I have been given the same advice not to drink orange juice, and avoid all citrus fruits. Any sour food, even  sour yoghurt.

But I believe if we eat the Vitaminc C tablets then we are ok, as we are avoiding the citric acid in the citrus fruits but still get the benefit of the Vitamin C.
